CALL FOR EDITORS: Asia-Pacific Journal of Risk and Insurance
 
The APRIA Executive Committee invites nominations, including self-nominations, for the position of Editor of the journal. APRIA has benefited greatly from the leadership and dedication of the current editors, Profs. Sam Cox and Soon-Jae Lee, from the creation of the editorial board to actual publication of the journal, and thanks them for their superb efforts.
 
Nominators should secure the agreement of those nominated. The Editor(s) serves for a three-year term that may be renewed. The Executive Committee intends to make its recommendation to the Board of Governors at the Tokyo annual conference, with the intent that the new editor will be in place shortly thereafter.
 
The nomination should include: (1) a complete curriculum vitae and (2) a statement of vision for the journal during the nominee’s tenure. All nominations should be e-mailed to the APRIA Secretariat at APRIA@scidomain.org.sg or Secretariat@apria.org. All questions may be referred to the secretariat.

Enterprise Risk Management University Program Accreditation. ERM Institute International (ERM-II), a non-profit organization initiated by an international group of universities and professional organizations, invites graduate-level university programs in financial engineering and quantitative risk management to apply for accreditation. Bill Chang (President-elect, Professor with National Chengchi U, Chinese Taipei) has recently appointed as the Insurance Commissioner, Financial Supervisory Commission, of the government. During his appointment, he will be on leave from his university. Despite his busy schedule during this transitional period, he will be at our meeting in Tokyo, to present the future of the insurance industry in his home country and to present several academic papers.

Country Reports Editor Needed! We are searching for an editor (or two) to manage our country reports. Country reports may include recent developments in insurance markets, regulations, or risk management practice. We would welcome brief, well-written case studies about Asia- Pacific countries. Since this is a new area the editor in charge would have a lot to do with how it develops. The country report editor would be responsible for fomenting this activity, recruiting authors, and producing at least one country report per issue. If you are interested, please send a copy of your detailed resume to the editors. If you can recommend someone, that would be welcome also.

Prof. Shang Hanji (Fudan University, Shanghai, China) has retired after serving the Faculty of Actuarial Science of Fudan University. Nevertheless, he remains active for the furtherance of the academic field at the university and elsewhere in China.
 
Fang Li (ING Pensions, Hong Kong) will spend 6 months at the ING headquarters in the Netherlands from April 2006. David Hatton with the same firm continues to represent ING Pensions in Hong Kong and India.

Toward a New Frontier: Globalization of Risk and Insurance Solutions

July 30 ~ August 2, 2006

          Call for Papers

The conference will be held at the Freedom Tower within the university. Professor Yasushi Morimiya is Counselor General for the conference.

The meeting is supported by the Financial Services Agency of Japan, the Japanese Society of Insurance Science, the Institute of Actuaries of Japan, the Association of Insurance Medicine of Japan, and the Japan Institute of Life Insurance. s We are securing several hotels nearby the venue at very reasonable rates (probably $100~150 per night).

The deadline for proposal submission is February 15, 2006.

All candidates for the Executive Committee and the Board of Governors are elected for the term beginning August 2005. The new officers are:

Newly elected governors are: Helmut Gründl (Humboldt University, Germany), Rasid Hussin (Mara Institute of Technology, Malaysia), Miyoharu Kobayashi (Dai-ichi Mutual Life Insurance Company, Japan), Igor Kotlobovsky (Moscow State University, Russia), Rahul Singh (Birla Institute of Management Technology, India), Chenghsien Tsai (National Chengchi University, Chinese Taipei) and Wang Xiaojun (Renmin University, China).

 

2005 World Congress was a Success

We had over 320 participants from 28 countries during the five-day period. There were presentations of 127 papers in concurrent sessions as well as six plenary and semi-plenary sessions. It is likely that all organizers will get together for the Second World Congress. We will keep you updated!

The Financial Services Agency of Japan endorses the conference. They have established the Conference Organization Committee this April.

Harold Skipper (Georgia State U) has retired from the academic institution since July 1, 2005. He plans to continue his contribution to the academic society. He can be reached at hskipper@mindspring.com.

David Hatton (ING Pension, Asia-Pacific) has assumed the duty of running pension business for his firm in India. He continues to work as CEO of the firm's Hong Kong business and as Asia-Pacific regional manager.

Harold Skipper Best Paper Award for Global Insurance

We are pleased to introduce this new award in honor of Professor Skipper who has made unconditional contribution and dedication to APRIA as well as the Department of Risk Management and Insurance, Georgia State University. The award will be given at APRIA's annual conference, beginning with its joint conference in 2005 (World Risk and Insurance Economics Congress), to the author(s) who present a paper of superb academic quality dealing with a global risk management, insurance or actuarial science issue. This $1,000 award annually has been made possible with the generous contribution by Georgia State University.

2005 World Risk and Insurance Economics Congress

[Proposals] There were more than 250 proposals, including 110 from APRIA members, to this global event. Successful submitters may expect notification from the WRIEC Scientific Committee of their decision around April 1, 2005.

Conference Registration and Hotel] The fee is US $300 for regular registration ($175 for student or spouse registration). The Sheraton City Centre Hotel offers rooms at a conference rate ($135 + taxes for single or double occupancy), which is much lower than its online rates. Seoul Conference was the best ever! 

Over 300 participants (including 130 overseas participants from 26 countries) attended various plenary and concurrent sessions. They also enjoyed the "Korean Night," a river cruise along with Korean traditional and fusion music performances. The conference was indeed a success in every aspect. At the closing ceremony, the president declared it as "the best planned and executed conference ever." All became possible with the dedicated organizers and supporters of the conference.

The organizers are Korea Insurance Academic Society, Korea Insurance Development Institute, and Korea Risk Management Society.

The supporters are: Financial Supervisory Service of Korea, Korea Life Insurance Association, and Korea Non-life Insurance Association.

Indian and Chinese Participants [visa application information]

[Indian participants] Seoul Organizers faxed copies of invitation letters to the four Korean consulate offices in India.

[Chinese participants] Seoul Organizers express mailed you an original, notarized invitation letter. They have also post mailed you an original conference brochure. Those who in Beijing must apply for visa through one of the travel agencies authorized by the Consulate Office in the city. Access to the building is limited and you CANNOT apply in person. I have already discussed this matter, and every person at the visa section window will have the following information. You need: (1) two visa application forms, (2) two photos, (3) the original, notarized invitation letter from Seoul, (4) an original copy of the conference brochure, (5) a print-out of APRIA program from the web site (please use the one at www.apria.org), (6) letter of employment in case of professor (or letter certifying you are a student in case of student), (7) letter of travel approval from your university in case of professor, (8) a copy of your ID, and (9) a copy of your residence certificate if your hometown is different from your workplace. You do NOT need the company registration number(s) of Seoul Organizers. Those in Shanghai are subject to the same document requirement. The only difference is that they can apply in person.

 

Entry Visa to Korea

The Korean government permits citizens of most countries to enter Korea without visa for a short-term stay (e.g., up to 30 days). However, it is always safe to check with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea to acquire the latest visa policy information. If you have a high quality research paper, you may send it to the editors using APJRI@apria.org. It takes approximately eight weeks for the editors to reach an initial decision based on double blind review.

World Risk and Insurance Economics Congress (WREIC). W. Jean Kwon attended a WRIEC Organization Committee meeting on December 8, 2003, in Paris, France. The Committee has, among others, finalized the call for papers, decided to offer financial aid to qualified concurrent session paper presenters, designed the basic program structure, and decided to launch conference marketing activity. 2003 Bangkok Conference. The 7th annual conference of APRIA in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 20-23, 2003 was a clear success. Over 250 members and guests from 23 countries participated in four plenary sessions and five concurrent sessions. The Association will soon make available its conference report. Wholehearted thanks to all who have made it possible, especially Chulalongkorn University, the Society of Actuaries of Thailand, and the Insurance Department of the Thai Ministry of Commerce.
